Whenever a new season or holiday comes around and I want to decorate with something new, I try to avoid purchasing new items, just to store them for 10 months out of the year. I look to what materials I already have, or I can grab from free in nature.
This year I saw picture of someone who bought a large plastic candy cane and wrapped it in string. I liked the homemade look but I didn’t want to buy anything. I looked around the house and in my craft bin of what I already have and these rustic, homemade candy canes came out so perfect.
Supplies:
- Cardboard
- Foil
- Fabric Scraps (I used an old sweater and pillow cover)
- Hot glue/gun
I cut cardboard into small strips about the length I wanted the straight part of the candy cane to be. With two pieces I smushed the sides together to soften the corners.

I cut about and 18″ piece of foil and put two cardboard pieces diagonally on the corner of the foil and started to roll it. When it got to the spot where there was a triangle of foil left I cut that and laid the candy candy about 2″ into it and rolled that around the top and curved it into the candy cane shape.

I ripped the fabric into about 6″ strips about 1 1/2″ wide. and then starting at the bottom I used the hot glue on the end and wrapped it around but going up with the next color I overlapped the previous color slightly so there were no gaps.

I did that all the way up and that was it. I like leaving the fraying edges of the fabric they look rustic and homey. Just my style!

These are perfect for indoor baskets or pots, hanging on a coat hook and anywhere else!
