Finding a round coffee table, the right size and one I liked was hard! When I purchased our new couch the old coffee table wouldn’t work. I am now working with limited space between the chaise parts of the couch so It couldn’t be big and I wanted round to soften the lines from the square look the couch.
I search all summer and round tables around 32″ were scarce. They either had metal legs, not my style or too expensive. So I decided to DIY.
When looking for inspiration I came across Rougue Engineers YouTube video. He made a beautiful round table out of one piece of plywood and I loved the smooth look of the legs without knots etc and it made it inexpensive.
The only thing was his coffee table was massive at 46″ so I had to do a bunch of math to bring the legs down to size of the 32″ top I was making but I did it. I followed his plans here.
The table looked great. The plans were well written and easy to navigate. But when I put it into our living room I didn’t like the legs. They looked too modern, to “angly” and just not really my style. I like the legs on his table but I think since my table was so much smaller it was too condensed and made it look harsh.
So as I was searching again I came across plans from Shanty2Chic and it was perfect! The legs were straight, rustic and I could use the wood I already put together to fix one I already made.
I took apart the legs and followed Shanty2Chic’s plans for the legs and they look great! I am really happy with the way it came out.
This coffee table was made out of a 1/2 sheet of plywood and edge banding. The technique for making the legs were Rouge Engineer’s plans but the leg design came from Shanty2Chic. So if you want an easy straightforward plans with 2x4s and premade top go with Shanty2Chich plans. If you want a thicker top, less rustic legs go with Rogue Engineer’s plans with using the plywood.
Here’s is the supplies I used to make my coffee table exactly:
Some of the following links are Affiliate links. Click here to see my full disclosure.
Supplies:
- 3/4 Plywood ( I used sanded Birch)
- 2″ Edge Banding
- Drill
- Router
- Miter Saw
- Table Saw
- Wood Screws
- Wood Glue
- Stain
You do not need these specific tools to make this table. If you don’t have a router or table saw, you can use a jigsaw or circular saw.
For the stain color I used 1 part Minwax Special Walnut mixed with two parts Varathane’s Classic Gray. It is the perfect rustic, warm tone stain color.
It fits perfectly into my living room and it just makes me so happy when people ask me where I got the coffee table and I can tell them I made it. That feels good every time!
