I love decorating with natural element and I love decorating with items that have meaning even more. Our family cottage on Seneca Lake is where we spend our summers and the kids love jumping in the lake, fishing and going for seagrass walks. I love picking up interesting rocks and driftwood.

I have made many items out of driftwood over the years which you can check out here. I even sold some on Etsy back in the day.

driftwood on a board for art

I have been envisioning making a piece of art using a bunch of my collected finds and I finally made it.

Supplies:

To make the frame I did a very rough dry fit on 1/4 sanded plywood (Luann board) that I had a scrap piece off to see what size would accommodate the largest piece and and other items.

I cut a 1x2x8 piece of pine to the size I needed and glued and nailed the corners together.

making a wood frame

I used my router’s rabbiting bit to make in 1/4″ indent in the frame for the back to set in. You could absolutely skip this step and just glue/nail the backing to the frame.

Using my jigsaw I cut the backing to size and glued and nailed it to the frame. I also stained the frame and painted the backing black.

Once I gathered all the items I wanted to put into the piece I did a quick dry fit again so I could figure out how the bigger pieces would fit. Once I was happy with the big pieces I used Weld it and started gluing the items right to the board. I would stop probably every 20mins to let them dry before I continued with more.

I made sure to put the small stones and pieces of driftwood aside, to use at the end as filler.

Once I was done I let the whole thing dry overnight and the next day I added D-rings and picture wire to the back to hang it up.

I love the way it turned out and it makes a great conversation piece and a beautiful element to my new gallery wall.
