Ikea Rast Hack

I am really excited to be a part of this fun blogger challenge hosted by Hickory Hardware and PPG Voice of Color!

The Challenge: Makeover an Ikea Rast dresser.  I was excited because I know how versatile these little $35 dressers from Ikea can be.

There are so many little nooks in our home I could use this piece but I decided since our new addition was going to arrive in June, our son was going to need a big boy room makeover and this little dresser would be the perfect nightstand to compliment his new big boy bed.

For Henry’s new nightstand I was thinking of doing some fun “kid” decor to it but I wanted it to grow with him. So I opted for streamlined, masculine, and industrial. I really love how it turned out.

This is how the dresser looked when I put it together. It’s raw wood, basic and no character.

I knew I wanted to take out one of the drawers and add a shelf. Something to make it easier for him to grab our nightly reading books and to put them back.

I started to paint the outside of the dresser and the 2 remaining drawers. I choose the color Gray Flannel by PPG The Voice of Color. It was their Manor Hall collection. I choose it because it was “highly scrubbable” which is perfect for kitchen cabinets and trim. I figured if it could take the abuse of kitchen cabinet use, it could take the abuse of a 2 year old.

I was actually surprised at how thin the paint was. I even stirred it more thinking I was missing something but it stayed the same. I was a little skeptical about the coverage because of the texture but I was instantly hooked. Even thought it was thin, it covered beautifully. It was smooth with no brush strokes!

Once the outside was dry, I decided I wanted the shelf to replace the top drawer.

I filled in the existing holes where the drawer runner was supposed to go, measured and cut some scrap wood and nailed the shelf into place using finishing nails.

When the filler was dry I sanded and painted the inside of the dresser.

I was really loving how this turned out, but I wanted to add a little bit of personalization for little Henry so I took out my stencils and using a small sample of PPG paint I stenciled in his initials.

This hack was really simple to do and took only a few hours including paint drying.

It’s so satisfying to create something that you love and it fits the vision in your mind.

The final touches for this little dresser were the lucite knobs that I choose from Hickory Hardware.

I think little Henry is going to love his new little nightstand.

We love what you did with this. Your hack is the favorite because of the open shelf on top. Great job!
