How to Organize Your Refrigerator

For me, I think the best times to organize and clean your refrigerator is right before vacation or right before you go grocery shopping.

Since we are going on vacation this week, I did not do any grocery shopping so our fridge is a little sparse. When it’s sparse, I can usually see that it needs a good cleaning and while I’m at it, some organization.

So that’s exactly what I did and I figured some of you might not be aware of where certain items should go in the refrigerator to help them last and keep you and your family safe.

Steps to a clean and organized refrigerator:

  1. Start out by going through what you have. Check expiration dates, do you have multiples, is something almost out and needs to go on your grocery list? Also what is in that container…should I even open it…
  2. Give it a good cleaning! Our refrigerator’s shelves come out so I give them a good scrub down in the sink. I like to use 20 Mule Team® Borax for cleaning. It’s natural, simple to use and not harsh. Just sprinkle a little on a damp sponge, scrub and rinse! (I also use Borax to help clean our sink and countertops) For even more uses of Borax go here.
  3. When placing your shelves back, adjust them so they can offer convenient spots for items. Make sure there is enough room to place that gallon of milk under a shelf or that you’re not wasting space above the eggs by having the shelves too high.
  4. When placing items back keep these tips in mind:
    1. Milk, Meat and items that spoil quickly should not be placed on the doors of the fridge. The constant opening and closing of the fridge will create uncontrolled temperatures on the doors and these items can spoil faster or induce bacterial growth.
    2. When placing fresh meat in the fridge keep it on a low shelf and put it on a plate to prevent dripping.
    3. Have leftovers? Place them in clear containers. I love my glass containers with lids. I can see what is in them and they are stackable!
    4. Do not overcrowd your fridge. Overcrowding can create warm spots and food will spoil quickly.
    5. Make sure your vegetables and fruit are in their own seperate crisper drawer to prevent spoiling.
    6. Group like items together. I like to have my dressings on one shelf, sandwich and burger condiments on another shelf, and dinner additions on another. This way I can see what I have and they are easy to grab.

Don’t know where to purchase Borax? I buy mine at Target. It’s in the Laundry aisle with the “additives”.

You can also visit and follow Borax here.
